vaguely based in reality

the 3G shutdown and inevitable 5G takeover

The development of wireless technology cleared the path to enable the rampant spread of consumer electronics. In order to support Murphy's Law, infrastructure had to outpace hardware and software innovation to enable commercial success.

The internet and network service providers (ISPs) who are responsible for developing and maintaining this infrastructure stay largely underground. It doesn't have the same allure as the shiny new thing that consumers can get their hands on. But in order to delve into the structural issues that plague modern-day technology, it's useful to understand the history and role of internet service providers.

generations of wireless technology [1]

  • 0G [1946]: The glorified walkie talkie
  • 1G [1976]: Boom! We have cell towers and voice calls
    • Motorola 8000X [1983]: Nicknamed "The Brick"!
  • 3G [1998]: Pocket computers and the portable internet
    • Blackberry [2001]: A corporate icon (rest in peace)
    • iPhone [2007]: Self-explanatory :)
    • T-Mobile G1 [2009]: Google's first Android phone (and So The Battle Begins...)
  • 4G [2009]: Touch screen supremacy
  • 5G [2019]: And now we're all connected!
